Because Out of the Grey followed several critically acclaimed Dream Syndicate albums and EPs that paid a heavy debt to The Velvet Underground's style, it was nearly inevitable that the more mainstream-sounding Out of the Grey would receive less enthusiastic reviews from longtime fans. Yet this edition of The Dream Syndicate—with Steve Wynn, Dennis Duck, Mark Walton, and producer Paul B. Cutler (from goth-punks 45 Grave)—deserves some praise. Out of the Grey suffers slightly from thinner production, but songs like the title cut, "Forest for the Trees," "Dying Embers," and "Boston" are too good to be easily dismissed. This deluxe edition includes covers of Eric Clapton's "Let It Rain," Neil Young's "Cinnamon Girl," Alice Cooper's "Ballad of Dwight Frye," and even a basement-tape snippet of the band running through The Rolling Stones' "Shake Your Hips." Fans of those artists should find that The Dream Syndicate did the songs justice.
