Details
[Edit]After years of flops and small hits, the Dramatics broke through with 1971’s “Whatcha See is Whatcha Get,” an assertion of straight-shooting pride. Dramatically Yours, which appeared two years later, brings a much softened tone. The album lives up to its punning title from the start, with “And I Panicked,” a tale of abandonment at the hands of a coldhearted lover. From there, the lush backings and strong group interaction — the Temptations’ lessons clearly in mind — support nearly every imaginable kind of soul love song: the doowop redux of “I Pray She’ll Never Go Away,” the cheater’s lament “I Made Myself Lonely,” and a “Toast to the Fool” who let her get away so that our hero gets to sing this one. The latter-day reissue boom in soul is a fine thing for countless reasons, among them the exhumation of a gem like this.
