The Dramatics were among the gutsiest of the sweet harmony groups of the early '70s, so it was no surprise that they relished the shift in musical tastes that happened around 1975, when the rise of disco intensified the genre’s rhythms. Funk and disco propelled new songs like "After the Dance,” “Finger Fever," and “Richest Man Alive,” but The Dramatics always made sure to keep their high-quality harmony arrangements front and center. Sweet harmony soul had already seen its peak, but Joy Ride contains a slew of hidden gems, among the last masterpieces in a once-dominant genre. “I Get Carried Away” and “Say the Word” are just about perfect, especially if you listen to them on a car stereo while cruising the urban landscape after hours. While The Dramatics never matched “In the Rain” for pure cinematic grandeur—nothing could—“I Can’t Get Over You” is a worthy descendent, with an echoing guitar figure reminiscent of the lightning effects of “Rain.”
