[Edit]Jessica Hernandez & The Deltas are yet another high-energy export from a city that’s never been short on music. Her Latin roots can be heard in a classic rock ’n’ roll sound that includes touches of girl-group pop, R&B, surf, and Motown. Secret Evil was finally released in 2014 after a two-year holdup due to a record-label merger. The EP Demons was issued in the interim in 2013. Produced by Latin GRAMMY winner Milo Froideval and mixed by current label head Richard Gottehrer, Secret Evil fulfills on all promises, highlighting an easeful sound that's both modern and retro, from the driving opener “No Place to Hide” to the cruising ska of “Dead Brains” and the Latin-influenced “Run Run Run.” The Iveys provide the perfect girl-group accompaniment to the playful “Sorry I Stole Your Man.” Hernandez dominates the album with a vocal style that’s strong on phrasing and attitude (“Over”) while avoiding the pitfalls of divas who mistake a multitude of notes for style. “Cry Cry Cry” demonstrates her peerless talents with a brokenhearted ballad.
