Produced by Paddy Moloney and T-Bone Burnett, Voice of Ages celebrates The Chieftains' 50th anniversary as the world's most famous and beloved traditional Irish band. They’ve got a slew of guests here, from indie rock's Bon Iver and Low Anthem to Americana's Punch Brothers and Irish and Scottish folk music's Lisa Hannigan. Appalachian folk music has many roots in the Irish countryside, and the shared affinities make "Come All Ye Fair and Tender Ladies" with Miranda Lambert's side project The Pistol Annies a perfect fit. The Decemberists' Colin Meloy mines Bob Dylan's "When the Ship Comes In" for a sweet recasting, while The Civil Wars pen their own "Lily Love" that sounds like one from the ages. Hannigan comes close to Sinead O'Connor territory for the evergreen "My Lagan Love," which always sounds like a singer bursting through a thick Irish fog. "The Frost Is All Over" relaxes The Punch Brothers while The Chieftains provide the traditional backing, as is their job throughout. The album’s deluxe edition includes a 30-minute video about the making of the album and the video for the Low Anthem collaboration "School Days Over."
