Explosive and quirky guitar-driven rock best describes this debut release from the San Francisco Bay area power trio. Polyrhythms and eccentricities, reminiscent of the Talking Heads, collide with Cream-like bombast to form a potent brew of under appreciated alternative art rock. Their best efforts ("Your Wonderful Pies," "Grow," "Tough Guy," "Rumors Are We") showcase Aaron Turney's dive-bombing guitar as it swoops and hurtles with Gregory Piper's roller coaster percussion, while "Dan Miskulin's rumbling, muscular bass anchors the groove. Their less successful efforts ("Blue Midway," "Shanghai Surprise") have moments of creative combustion, usually during instrumental interludes where the band rearranges and re-imagines the possibilities of the song. Overall, Heavy Wants to Eat is an imaginative and dangerous work in the best rock & roll tradition. ~ Joe Pettit, Jr., Rovi
