Though their fame never approached that of Holland-Dozier-Holland (the era's best-known Detroit songwriting trio), Fred Bridges, Ben Knight, and Robert Eaton were among the most consistently outstanding songwriters on the Detroit soul scene. The trio penned classics for the likes of the Masqueraders, The Precisions, Ruby Andrews, and dozens of others. Emboldened by their successes as a songwriting team, Bridges, Knight, and Eaton decided to form their own vocal group, The Brothers of Soul. Between 1967 and 1971, the trio released a slew of luminous, near-perfect soul sides that rival anything produced by Motown in terms of the sophistication of songwriting and arrangements. A few of these releases were regional hits—like the insistent, horn-laden “Hurry, Don’t Linger” and the yearning “Dream"—but the group never achieved enough recognition to justify a full-length release. Their brilliant body of work remains one of the hidden treasures of Detroit soul music.
