With Today!, The Beach Boys began a serious artistic shift. Brian Wilson started working in the recording studio exclusively, eventually leaving stage duties to Bruce Johnston. A group of L.A. session musicians known as The Wrecking Crew—featuring legendary drummer Hal Blaine, Glen Campbell, bassists Carol Kaye and Larry Knetchel (later of 70s soft-rockers Bread), among many—were brought in to expand the musical approach. The album is divided into two distinct sides. The first six songs are upbeat, including Bobby Freeman's "Do You Wanna Dance?," Wilson's "When I Grow Up (To Be a Man)," and a slower non-hit version of "Help Me Rhonda." Side two, aside from the silly comedic piece "Bull Session with the 'Big Daddy'," features reflective, wistful ballads, including the heartbreaking "Please Let Wonder," "Kiss Me, Baby," "In the Back of My Mind," and a cover, "I'm So Young." Mono mixes were how the album was meant to be heard back in the days of transistor radios. The new stereo mixes, however, are a true revelation and bring a classic album to new life.
