Initially planned as Brian Wilson's first solo album (to be called Brian Wilson Loves You), the 1977 set Beach Boys Love You was rescued by brother Carl and finessed into a proper Beach Boys album. It's considered one of Brian Wilson's most personal statements, and he plays a good chunk of the instrumentation here. It is, essentially, Brian Wilson's Comeback, Pt. 2. His voice has been altered by the years, but he still has his unmistakable feel for music. He brings an innocence to "Good Time," which had been recorded around the time of the Sunflower album, and a childlike wonder to "Solar System" and "The Night Was So Young," where he's helped along by Carl. Dennis, Carl, and Brian combine for the sublimely weird "I'll Bet He's Nice." Brian's then-wife Marilyn adds her considerable vocal chops to "Let's Put Our Hearts Together" for a perfect call-and-response. Dennis Wilson and Brian pull off "I Wanna Pick You Up." The Roger McGuinn–cowritten "Ding Dang" had been circulating on work tapes through the decade.
