Manager Jack Rieley suggested that The Beach Boys record in the Netherlands in hopes of jumpstarting Brian Wilson out of his depression. Yet Wilson eventually headed back to L.A., while Al Jardine and Mike Love became homesick, writing a three-part suite ode to California (the "California Saga"), featuring spoken word and the vocal work of Love, Jardine, Brian Wilson, and Carl Wilson. It's one of the weirdest pieces of music they were to put together, and it's quite enjoyable, similar to Tim Hardin's underrated Suite for Susan Moore and Damion. The third piece of the saga, "(California)," brings back the good spirit of The Beach Boys' optimistic '60s work, with Brian adding his voice to the mix. Blondie Chaplin helped pen and sings the soulful "Leaving This Town," which sounds more like a solo work than a Beach Boys tune. Brian Wilson did contribute "Sail On, Sailor," sung by Chaplin, and "Funky Pretty." This album also features Mount Vernon and Fairway (A Fairy Tale), a bonus EP centered on Brian Wilson's songs that had led to a rift between him and his bandmates. It's a highlight from a convoluted period.
