If you didn't know that the Los Angeles five-piece Bad Things featured gold-medal snowboarder Shaun White on lead guitars, you'd never guess this was a champion athlete's side project. The band features White and his childhood friends, and their vaguely retro sound is a raucous mix of jagged guitars, swinging rhythms, and the brash vocals of singer Davis LeDuke, who channels everyone from Elvis Costello to Julian Casablancas. The aptly titled "Saturday Night" has a disco beat and slinking guitars, while characteristically boisterous tracks like "Vices" and "Anybody" forefront White's lead guitar. And guess what—the dude can play! When the band slow things down for "Caught Inside" and "Bury" (the latter of which features drummer/vocalist Lena Zawaideh doing a spot-on Nico impression), it's clear that Bad Things mean business. The deluxe version of their debut features two additional tracks: the piano-driven "Cold Case" and the driving "John Wayne."
