Marketed as Nashville’s first Female Hat Act, Terri Clark took awhile to loosen up and fully explore her artistic personality. Her career trajectory (thus far) is traced on 2008’s 18-track Definitive Collection. While Clark has had other best-of packages, this anthology deserves notice for presenting her most representative work in coherent chronological order. The high-charting singles from her early albums – “Better Things to Do,” “When Boy Meets Girl,” and “You’re Easy on the Eyes” among them – are all gathered here. “No Fear” (represented by a live cut) and “I Just Wanna Be Mad” find her taking some chances lyrically and moving away from the constricted, twang-heavy vocal mannerisms of her first hits. More recent recordings delve into sexual politics (“Girls Lie Too”), celebrate tomboys (“One of the Guys”), and find brotherhood through alcohol (“The World Needs a Drink”) with a relaxed, playful air. Clark has gained depth and individuality over the years, something all too few Nashville hit-makers can claim. This collection lays out her story in convincing fashion.
