Released in a limited edition as a part of 12k's ongoing special projects and reissues series, 1AM is a 20-plus minute exercise in the digital manipulation of field recordings, blocks, bell and glockenspiel. Far more aggressive than his previous works Stil and Northern, it continues a trend of Taylor Deupree's incorporating more layers of noise and hiss in his work (see his collaboration with Richard Chartier on the 12k sublabel Line's excellent Specification Fifteen release). It might prove irritating to those who enjoy their Deupree on the softer side. However, it's this aggression that brings out some of one of the most subtly missed points of Deupree's production: the slicing of microscopic samples and their gradual shaping of rhythmic patterns and textures that slowly evolve over a long period of time. Fans of Deupree's work will want to pick this up on sight, as it was issued in a very limited quantity.
