The wordless, a cappella singing on Zauerli, Yodel of Appenzell is the real deal: authentic folk music from the mountains of northeastern Switzerland. Zauerli recall European hymns, but at times they also evoke Tuvan throat singing and Native American chant. The lead singers are accompanied by polyphonic vocal backing; at times, you can hear cowbells rattle. Performers intone at an all-the-time-in-the-world pace, emitting strings of notes as natural as flowing water. The sounds are soothing, dreamy, and wonderfully strange.
