Swamp Baby's second album finds the upstate New York band in new territory. While the bare acoustics of its 2010 debut, All Fours, are in place here, the arrangements often expand with unexpected tonal surges. The songs themselves were partly inspired by the birth of Emily Wing, the daughter of bandmates (and husband and wife) Mike and Meg Hotter. Basic tracks were once again recorded at a temple on seriously hot days. That steamy, sweaty Tennessee Williams atmosphere permeates the hushed silences of "Love Wants to Stay," where the guitars sound lifted from the quietest moments of Neil Young's On the Beach. "The Sad Truth About Fun" adds drummer Matthew Loiacono and a spirited chorus of voices for a tune that's part field holler, part hootenanny, and part modern-day Americana. "Prince Rachmed" adds a heavy metal blues-rock dirge to a funk that's halfway to My Morning Jacket.
