Dispensing with the notion that dream-pop needs whisper-sung vocals, Sucré frontwoman Stacy King lets her gossamer inflections soar. Sucré features King, her husband/bandmate Darren King (from MuteMath), and producer/multi-instrumentalist Jeremy Larson. The group's 2012 debut album, A Minor Bird, confidently dabbles in various subgenres woven into a dream-pop foundation. The orchestral opener, “Hiding Out,” plays with overwhelmingly large string arrangements, as Stacy croons like a Björk/Joanna Newsom hybrid over plucked harp notes and a panoramic symphony. Those swelling string and wood tones blend with subtle electro flourishes and programmed beats on the outstanding “When We Were Young,” a song overflowing with melodies that are equally lulling and memorable. Stacy’s lyrics endearingly touch on bittersweet nostalgia for childhood adventure tales, where fairy-princess galas and tea parties with a sprawling cast of imaginary friends were everyday occurrences. “Chemical Reaction” ebbs and flows with an undercurrent of funk rhythms, enveloped in the trio’s otherworldly soundscapes.
