A decade-plus into a career where daring political views have long collided with agit-punk, Vancouver's Submission Hold are D.I.Y. to the core, frequently rocking basements and VFW halls while pointing a middle finger in the face of all that's mainstream. Fronted by Jen Thrownup, the group's activist mouthpiece comes out swinging on What Holds Back the Elephant as she spiritedly rails against George W. Bush on "Final Coup of the Last Millennium" while her bandmates create a chaos akin to Fugazi's. If the troupe isn't as direct as the aforementioned on expansive, noodling numbers like "Woodenhead" — which balks at religion as it embraces jazz — it does rival it in intensity. Regularly concocting urgent, cathartic underground rock with stressful rhythms, Submission Hold throws rocks of criticism at "Democracy" in a manner fans of a thinking person's punk will succumb to with little effort. ~ John D.
