On Deep Roots, Steven Curtis Chapman takes a sharp turn from his usual pop-rock style and reconnects with the musical heritage of his native Kentucky, combining fresh versions of traditional hymns with reworkings of his own compositions and a cover of Bill Gaither’s classic “He Touched Me.” Acoustic guitars, mandolins, and banjos take the place of synthesizers and techno beats, giving these tracks an intimate feel. Deep Roots is definitely a family affair, with three generations of Chapman’s family joining in. SCC sings with father Herb and brother Herb Jr. on a spirited rendition of “Life Is Like a Mountain Railway.” A sparkling take on “How Great Thou Art” features the airy tones of daughter-in-law Jillian, while “Be Still and Know” spotlights son Caleb.
