One of rock guitar's most respected — yet seemingly ofttimes overlooked — players is certainly Steve Morse. While he's best known for his stints with such bands as the Dixie Dregs, Kansas, and Deep Purple, Morse has also issued albums on his own, as well as a multitude of collaborations and appearances on tribute albums — quite a few of which are collected on the 2009 compilation, Prime Cuts, Vol. 2. Now, don't be fooled — this is not a proper career-encompassing "Morse best-of," as it merely collects standouts from recordings he's done over the years for the Magna Carta label. But for a taster of modern-day Morse, Prime Cuts, Vol. 2 certainly contains some technique-heavy six-string work, especially on such tracks as "Zig Zags" and "Portrait," and how about a tribute to the undisputed forefathers of prog metal, Rush, with a reading of "Red Barchetta" (which features Dream Theater vocalist James LaBrie behind the mike)? For a potpourri of modern-day Morse, Prime Cuts, Vol. 2 is certainly worth a listen.
