Long May You Run

Crosby and Nash always represented the whimsical, tuneful side of CSNY, while Stills and Young brought the supergroup its soul and grit. Oddly, when the quartet split itself into two pairs, each duo took on the other’s qualities. Crosby & Nash’s Wind On the Water was full of guitar-driven drama, while Stills and Young’s Long May You Run contains some of the mildest music of either man’s career. Stills’ songs “12/8 Blues” and “Guardian Angel” faintly echo the dueling guitar fury of their Buffalo Springfield days, while his “Make Love To You” is a moody piece of pop-rock. “Midnight On the Bay” is about as close as Young ever got to the yacht-rock of Jimmy Buffet and Loggins & Messina, but the tumbling, buzzing country of “Let It Shine” can sit comfortably next to Young classics like “Roll Another Number” and “Lookin’ For a Love.” The title track — Young’s ode to his infamous Buick Roadmaster hearse, the car he was driving when he first met Stills — is an easygoing, expertly crafted piece of folk rock that would go on to become one of Young’s signature songs.
