Independent filmmaker Jim Jarmusch’s clearly defined minimalist aesthetic can be seen and felt in every film he’s made. His music follows suit. Heavily influenced by the early days of The Velvet Underground and their interest in the drones of minimalist composer La Monte Young, SQURL’s music is unorthodox. Working here with drummer Carter Logan and guitarist-engineer Shane Stoneback, Jarmusch achieves a loud, clanging, tonally pleasing assault (“Pink Dust,” “Dead Naked Hippies”) that plays around with Elvis Presley’s “Little Sister” and a final tone poem dedicated to his sometimes collaborator Jozef Van Wissem.
