The deliberately enigmatic Anna Varney of Sopor Aeternus returns with more of what European goths are seeking: mysticism and melancholy. She is dealing with personal issues about transexuality, which certainly contributes to the level of pain in her lyrics. And who are the Ensemble of Shadows? Anna Varney says they are spirits who offer her inspiration for her compositions. Small wonder that Sopor Aeternus, who gives no live audience performances, has nevertheless attained cult status. "Gebet: An Die Glucklichen Eroberer" features anguished vocals, while "Ich Wollte Hinaus in Den Garten," a prose recitation to music, sounds grieved and imploring. The gently melodic "On Satur(n)days We Used to Sleep" is perhaps the most peaceful selection, while for contrast, "Across the Bridge" strikes an ominous tone. In all, this is another definitive performance, and fans of goth music will definitely wish to add this classically dark album to their collections.
