A nice budget collection of some of the sides Sleepy cut for Shelby Singleton's reactivated Sun label in the late 1960s and early '70s. Although there isn't nearly enough of Sleepy's own electric guitar in the mix and the Nashville session players backing him sound a bit stiff at times, these sides come as close as any to capturing a small chunk of Sleepy's prodigious song list. That Rolodex of songs covers everything from rockers like "Tore Up" and "Boogie Woogie Country Girl" to R&B ballads like "Raining in My Heart" and "There's Something on Your Mind" to straight-ahead country tracks like "Faded Love" and "Blackland Farmer," the closest Sleepy has ever come to having a hit. An eclectic set, just like the man performing it.
