[Edit]Some of the instrumental recordings that Aladdin labeled new age weren't really new age — they were actually traditional or contemporary Persian/Iranian music. Aladdin reasoned that from a marketing standpoint, new age was a good way to describe those releases. However, one Aladdin release that could honestly be termed new age is keyboardist/composer Sia Vash's City of the Sun, although it could also be called world music. Those who think of new age as mindless, vacuous and less-than-stimulating will find that in fact, this CD has a lot of substance. "Faces in Stone," "Moongate," "Mountain Palace" and other charming instrumentals on this CD (which found Vash in an all-instrumental setting after several albums as a vocalist) don't require the listener to turn his/her brain off. Drawing on Middle Eastern music, Spanish flamenco, pop and jazz, City of the Sun is mellow enough to appeal to new age fans but will also attract those who don't want to hear elevator muzak.
