Before recording Shuteye's debut studio album, 2012's Hush Hush, the Chicago-based Elysia Hang-Fu and Alena Ratner were successful musicians in their own right. Hang-Fu is an award-winning singer/songwriter whose first album was crafted with help from Grammy-nominated producer Simon Illa. Ratner honed her skills as an underground DJ and producer before touring prominent European venues. As Shuteye, they create dreamy soundscapes with innovative mixes, peppered with ear-popping percussion. "Dreams" opens Hush Hush with syncopated rhythms balanced against a foggy dream-pop periphery, as Hang-Fu inflects like a young Miki Berenyi from '90s shoegazers Lush. “Died” follows, with more grit rubbed into the bass. Ratner’s icy production brims with coldwave synthesizers and chilling drum machine beats, as Hang-Fu’s vocals hover overhead like an apparition from 4AD’s This Mortal Coil trilogy. “Hearts and Stones” delivers a sexy pulse underneath squiggly synth lines and Hang-Fu’s breathy and alluring coos.
