This five-song EP is a tribute to George Jones. To Jennings, Jones wasn’t just a country legend; he was a family friend who visited his dad, Waylon, from time to time. So when “Possum” died in 2012, it was personal. This EP features two originals from Jennings and three covers of classic Jones songs. Of course, no one can sing George Jones like George Jones, long considered among the finest country singers of all time. But Jennings brings his heart and passion to these covers. The originals include the stirring acoustic tune “Living in a Minor Key” (which Jennings had written with Faren Miller in hopes of having Jones sing it) and “Don’t Wait Up (I’m Playin’ Possum),” which alludes to the ways country musicians are alike in their self-destructive ways. Of the covers, “She Thinks I Still Care” is played as an atmospheric ballad. Katy Cole joins Jennings for a slow lope through “If Drinkin’ Don’t Kill Me (Her Memory Will).” Additional sound effects and arena-treated guitars create a super-sized version of “The Door.”
