Pop auteur Fred Thomas has a gift for whipping up studio mini-masterpieces. That's in evidence throughout One Kiss Ends It All, his latest project under his band moniker Saturday Looks Good to Me. As on past releases, he assembles a diverse crew of guest singers and players to render his deftly textured and sweetly melodic confections, tipping his hat to everyone from Phil Spector to Prefab Sprout. Thomas’ music combines the whimsy of a homebrew audio eccentric with the clear-eyed focus of a classic hitmaker. This curious blend is also evident in the lyrics; tunes like “Invisible Friend” and “Sunglasses” suggest ripples of neurosis under their sunny surfaces. The album is rich with brilliant touches, like the dreamily dissonant chorale vocals of “One Kiss,” the ghostly synth echoes of “Negative Space” and the chilled soul-pop groove of “Polar Bear.” A fine cast of female vocalists—including SLGTM’s Amber Fellows and Bad Indians’ Autumn Wetli—complement Thomas’ plaintive croon. Overall, One Kiss Ends It All radiates a bruised innocence tempered by subversive wit.
