Sandy Denny was at the fore of an entire musical movement (the British folk revival) and was beloved by some of her era's biggest rock bands, including Led Zeppelin and The Who. So why isn’t she better known? Mostly, she was too singular and intense for the mainstream music market. She had the supernatural allure of a rock goddess, but her lyrical themes and the timbre of her voice were more connected to ancient notions of beauty than anything in contemporary pop music. Though her originality and passion may have precluded massive stardom, it was precisely those qualities that won her an enduring cult audience after her untimely death in 1978, at age 31. Though her name may be synonymous with the revitalization of traditional British folk, these 10 songs prove that she was far too stormy and majestic to be boxed in by the parameters of an antiquated genre. Whatever the style, her music was always her own. Her legacy isn't that of a folkie queen but of a troubled soul and artistic individualist.
