[Edit]Hot, Cool and Vicious was Salt-N-Pepa’s first major step toward their goal, explicitly stated in this debut album’s liner notes, of equaling the success of male counterparts Run-D.M.C., Whodini and the Fat Boys. With the aid of DJ Spinderella and “super producer” Hurby Luv Bug, they scored one of the most important early hip-hop crossovers with the randy “Push It.” (The song wasn’t included on the disc’s first pressings.) The album carries more of that spare electro style (“Beauty and the Beat”) while also offering a nod to reggae on “I Desire” and collecting the group’s singles up to this point. Among these are “The Showstopper”’s goodnatured takeoff on Doug E. Fresh and Slick Rick’s “The Show,” and the giddy boast “My Mic Sounds Nice” and “Tramp,” in which they pick up Carla Thomas’ gauntlet. Hot stands as not only a key full-length in rap history, but also as deeply entertaining fun.
