MGM's "Spectaculars in Sound" series, while not extensive, does a wonderful job of showcasing particular instruments and instrument groups. Other "Spectacular" titles include Accordions, Brass, and Percussion. The version of "Caravan" is amazing — it has to be the mark at least for all other harpists. Maxwell's use of overdubbing reaches its zenith here. The high, ringing harps remind one of Jimi Hendrix's Rainbow Bridge version of "The Star-Spangled Banner" (or "The Defense of Fort M'Henry," as Key titled it). "Hong Kong Holiday" also is wonderful. This is a great record, not his best, but certainly spectacular; it may be the best of the series.
