Opening with the plodding riffs of "Electric Man,” Great Western Valkyrie is the Rival Sons’ biggest and baddest studio effort, a no-holds-barred assault of ‘70s-influenced rock, swirling psychedelia, and overdriven guitars. Tunes like “Secret” and “Play the Fool” are inspired by the muscular, blues-driven bash of Zeppelin and Sabbath, while more solemn moments (“Rich and the Poor,” “Good Things”) are awash in psychedelic guitars and spacey reverb. Vocalist Jay Buchanan offers inspired songwriting and howling intensity throughout—matched at every turn by the fierce guitar work of Scott Holiday.
