Ringo Starr’s solo success in the early ‘70s was largely the result of his likable everyman image and some fine songs that he could handle. After his initial success, though, times changed; by the late ‘70s, he was out of step with the music world. A long break let him come back in the ‘90s. And once Ringo locked into the "All Starr Band" concept—in which an ensemble of other famous and semi-famous musicians played their songs along with Ringo’s hits—that became his formula, and a pleasing one it is. Over the years, many live All Starr albums have been released as tour souvenirs. This one from 2003 features a recording of the tour's opening night at the Casino Rama, outside of Toronto. Percussionist Sheila E. returns from the 2001 band (and performs “The Glamorous Life”), while John Waite is on bass, Paul Carrack’s on keyboards, and Men at Work’s Colin Hay is on guitar (also performing “Who Can It Be Now” and “Down Under”). Ringo performs “Memphis in Your Mind” (from his then-current album, Ringorama) and a nice chunk of classic Beatles songs.
