This collection captures a crucial transitional time in Rick Nelson's career—the one in which he came to full musical maturity. The mid-'60s tracks here bear echoes of Nelson's early years as a pop-rock teen idol. But by the end of the '60s, Nelson's had taken took a sharp left turn, and he became a pioneering part of the burgeoning L.A. country-rock scene. The onetime clean-cut kid, now nearing 30, started growing his hair out and covering Bob Dylan ("She Belongs to Me") as well as penning his own tracks that were in tune with the times. Ironically, in 1972 a song about his old fans' dismissal of his new sound, "Garden Party," gave Nelson his biggest hit in 10 years.
