A pioneering group in both jazz-fusion and proto-prog-rock, Return to Forever was formed in the early '70s by pianist Chick Corea, who'd recently played on classic albums like Miles Davis' Bitches Brew. He joined forces with inimitable bassist Stanley Clarke, plus a rotating roster of other players, and released seven RTF albums between '72 and '77. Mixing super-technical musicianship with futuristic arrangements and unpredictable, often breakneck transitions, the band developed a cultlike following and arguably hit its peak with 1976's gold-selling Romantic Warrior. RTF reunited in 2008 with its classic lineup (including drummer Lenny White and guitarist Al Di Meola) and released a boxed set featuring remixed and remastered tracks. The Mothership Returns was recorded on its 2011 tour (with Jean-Luc Ponty and Frank Gamballe added to the mix) and finds RTF sounding as good as ever, delivering a double-disc set that includes much-loved favorites like "The Romantic Warrior" and "After the Cosmic Rain."
