Three separate trios led by this up-and-coming pianist are featured in this compilation, produced by John Lewis for Atlantic. Dick Katz, accompanied by bassist Ralph Pena and drummer Connie Kay, is heard on four songs, including his lively blues "Jeff & Jamie" and a subtle take of "Don't Explain." Derek Smith, an Englishman befriended by Lewis not long after his arrival in the United States, is joined by Percy Heath and Connie Kay for three tracks, the best of which is a moving "Chelsea Bridge." French pianist René Urtreger utilizes bassist Paul Rovere and drummer Al Levitt for his four selections, including a rather understated "Jumpin' at the Woodside." Although the playing throughout this disc is enjoyable, nothing particularly memorable occurs. Long a collector's item, Jazz Piano International was eventually reissued with an unrelated album on CD by Collectable.
