Though far less renowned than his contemporaries Coxson Dodd and Bunny Lee, Vincent ‘Randy’ Chin was one of reggae’s savviest label owners. As the mastermind behind Randy’s Records Chin ushered the nascent Jamaican music scene through its heady early years. Established in 1958, Randy’s released seminal recordings by many of Jamaica’s most talented musicians and singers, including The Skatalites, Alton Ellis and Toots & The Maytals. This well-assembled two-disc retrospective features 50 of the finest sides released by Randy’s, beginning with the stirring Jamaican independence anthem “Independent Jamaica” by Lord Creator, and ending with Carl Malcolm’s whimsical “Fattie Bum Bum.” Along the way listeners are treated to stunning instrumental sides by virtuosos like the organist Jackie Mittoo and the trombonist Rico Rodriquez, as well as a host of rare ska, Rocksteady, and even Mento numbers, some of which will be unfamiliar to even hardened reggae collectors.
