[Edit]

For this LP, cornetist Red Nichols expanded his Five Pennies from six pieces to twelve, allowing him to arrange some colorful ensembles while still retaining the flavor of Dixieland. With a backup crew that includes trombonist King Jackson, the great bass saxophonist Joe Rushton and clarinetist Heinie Beau, Nichols revisits such veteran songs as "Louisiana," "Maple Leaf Rag," "Ida" (a big hit for him in the 1920s) and "Farewell Blues." The music is enjoyable but will be difficult to find, since Capitol has yet to reissue any of their many Red Nichols records on CD.
