While the Burden brothers — Lawrence, Lenny, and Lynell (supported by Lorne and Lance) — will be noted in the history books as the men behind the pristine song-based techno of Octave One, dancers will recognize their work, if not their name, as Random Noise Generation. Started as the alias for Lenny Burden's sample-based musical experiment "Falling in Dub," RNG became the outlet for the Burden brothers' heavier loop-based techno. Links in the Chain compiles many of RNG's vinyl-only dancefloor moments, along with an equal number of new tracks. The tone of the music stretches from the scorched-guitar sample found on the tech-house-y "Instrument of Change" to the wickedly dark off-color synth stabs on "Human HT." Although a few of the older tracks should have been left alone as DJ tools, Links in the Chain gathers together some astonishing moments of dancefloor power and creativity by the most proactive brothers in Detroit techno.
