Details
[Edit]Although it had long been true that the great stride pianist Ralph Sutton had not recorded enough throughout the early part of his career, that certainly was not true during 1979-81. For the Chaz label, Sutton was featured on no less than 12 LPs within the two-year period. Unfortunately, with the exception of his piano duets with Jay McShann, the music has been out of print since the mid-1980s. On this particular album, the first of two matchups with cornetist Ruby Braff, Sutton and Braff are showcased on a dozen duets. In addition to the usual stomps (including "Between the Devil and the Deep Blue Sea," "Royal Garden Blues" and "Dinah"), the duo performs three Willard Robison songs. Braff's lyrical, subtle playing brings out the versatility in Sutton's accompaniment, making this a highly enjoyable (if rare) outing.
