A new project by Carla Kihlstedt (Tin Hat Trio, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum, 2 Foot Yard, The Book of Knots) and Matthias Bossi (Skeleton Key, The Book of Knots, Mike Patton, Sleepytime Gorilla Museum), Rabbit Rabbit is something a bit more cuddly and melodic from people known to be artistic and challenging. Vol. 1 is also actually a collection of the husband-and-wife duo’s first year of the Rabbit Rabbit Radio subscription service, where they released a song a month. Considering the versatility of the two multi-instrumentalists and the incremental release strategy, the album has a patchwork feel to it—both in the intricate handmade quality of some tracks (“Ballad for No One” and “After the Storm”) and the unexpected programming twists. (The transition from the soaring, Björk-like “Hush Hush” to the electro pop of “Me Gusta el Calor” isn't exactly smooth.) This set is all over the place, but engagingly so; it'll be interesting to see how this project unfolds.
