Cheekily naming his second album Thriller, multi-instrumentalist PT Walkley recorded the follow-up to Mr. Macy Wakes Alone all by his lonesome, emphasizing the electronic textures in his pop arsenal. Walkley—who scored Edward Burns' 2010 film Nice Guy Johnny and his December 2011 movie Newlyweds—doesn't shy from kitschy arrangements to illustrate the joy of "Summer Song" or add a sonic excitement to the sparkly groove of the instrumental "The Purpose of a Skunk." (The latter, at a little over a minute and a half, is an average-length track on this opus just shy of 22 minutes.) The jaunty, ambling "The Way That You Are" is an epic at four-plus minutes compared to the instrumental interludes ("The Marriage of Mice" and "Mellotronic Growth Plate") or the quick chorale send-off of "A Little Better." The album sounds like a man exploring the adventures of technology, with sketches of ideas and impulses creating an offhand appeal.
