A so-called supergroup collage of three Winnipeg-based indie rock bands, Projektor almost hit the mark with the pop radio-friendly sensibilities of Catherine Wheel alongside the more emotional reflections of art rocksters Sigur Ros and Radiohead. Rarely straying far from the mold, the soppy tinges of The Warm Winter come off a bit stale, even shallow. As go the guitars, though, so goes the album. The riffs appear just in the nick of time, often salvaging what appears to be a filler track into something more complete and coherent. What is a concern is how some songs should be building slightly into a crescendo earlier than they are. And many of the songs, with the exception of the lovely "Beautiful Skin," simply don't bring the listener in. Numbers such as "Silver Circles" take a Pink Floyd feel, despite the fact the song is rather muddled. Needling for a direction also occurs in quite a few numbers. There is a very fine line between great, electrifying music and sounding as if one is trying to achieve it. In far fewer places than required for a great album, Projektor appears on the scene.
