Pierre Dørge's eclectic approach to jazz draws from many styles of music throughout the world. This 2008 concert with his New Jungle Orchestra begins with "Mbizo Mbizo," a wild piece that starts as a duet by the guitarist and tenor saxophonist Morten Carlsen delving into the avant-garde and then features a quote from "O Solo Mio" on koro by Dawda Jobarteh and quotes from jazz standards by Thelonious Monk and Duke Ellington before it is transformed by Josefine Cronholm's dreamy vocal. Even then the piece resists holding its shape, as Dørge and his musicians keep the listener guessing as to their path. Jobarteh's kora and vocal are the centerpiece of the Gambian folk song "Fode Kaba," with Dørge's infectious arrangement gradually joining the celebration. "Swaralaya," penned by Indian flutist Shashank Subramanyam and featuring its composer initially on bass flute and later on Indian flute, is a captivating composition that is full of tension. Dørge's "Whispering Elephants" has an ominous air, particularly due to Irene Becker's eerie synthesizer. Highly recommended.
