San Francisco's Pidgeon debut their indie-pop-emo-punk with From Gutter With Love on Absolutely Kosher. The aggressive, distorted guitars and female/male vocal interaction on From Gutter With Love give a huge nod to '90s groups like Pixies, Velocity Girl, Tsunami and Star Pimp. Pidgeon are at their best when they layer on the male/female pop harmonies against the distortion of the guitars, as on "Six Minutes in the Sun" or "Sty." With three guitarists, one would think that the production on From Gutter With Love would be thicker and parts more pronounced. On most tracks, Pidgeon get their ideas across, but on others they seem to mess with the core of songs in an unfocused way, confusing themselves and the listener. From Gutter With Love is a very long record, clocking in at 55 minutes. Pidgeon may have too many areas that they are trying to cover with their debut, but focusing on their strengths could reveal powerful moments on their future releases.
