By standing against the prevailing trends of 12-tone and serial composition techniques in the 1960s, Philip Glass became one of the 20th century’s most influential composers. Although a founder of American Minimalism, Glass turned toward extroverted Romanticism in the 1980s and embraced traditional compositional forms, writing operas, concertos and a large body of concert pieces. His Symphony No. 8 is a dynamic statement in the tradition of the grand symphony, which unfolds in three movements. Spanning 19 minutes, the first movement alone presents eight distinct themes and culminates in a finale that layers them all in counterpoint.
