On the Record is a ten-inch album with eight humorous fast-talking story songs by Phil Harris, the pop world's Tex Williams. (Actually, Tex Williams is country music's Phil Harris, since Harris began recording long before Williams). Harris' signature song, "That's What I Like About the South," is the first cut, followed by a remake of his 1946 hit "Darktown Poker Club." Harris dips into R&B repertoire with a cover of Louis Jordan's "Ain't Nobody Here But Us Chickens," and delivers a hilarious preservationist message in "Woodman, Spare That Tree." "Look Out Stranger I'm a Texas Ranger" is a standout — a boastful western tale that name-checks Harris' competitor, Tex Williams. On the Record is brief but consistent; and a fun collector's item for vinyl lovers.
