It's the Right Thing pairs saxophonist Pete Yellin with electric pianist Hal Galper for a shimmering set of laser-focused jazz-funk grooves. Yellin solos on both alto and flute, and his lighter-than-air tone is perfectly complemented by Galper's warm, rich support—for all the mainstream appeal of the production, however, darker undercurrents ripple below the surface of the melodies, enriching the scope and depth of the performance as a whole. Like so many Mainstream Records sessions from the mid-Seventies, much of the material originates from the charts, most notably a lovely cover of Stevie Wonder's "You Are the Sunshine of My Life," but It's the Right Thing never veers too close to pop for its own good—righteous stuff.
