With a title (though not a cover) evoking the heady days of mid-'50s "concept" albums, the Buddha compilation Sings Songs of Faith & Inspiration grabs the complete contents of Perry Como's 1958 LP When You Come to the End of the Day and adds five tracks of a similar vintage which also fit the theme. Though the running order of the original LP is changed considerably, compiler/authority George Townsend's immense knowledge of all things Perry Como ensures a sympathetic treatment. Como occasionally stretches the upper limits of his smooth baritone, as on the highlights "Only One" and "I May Never Pass This Way Again," but usually clings to rather staid modes of delivery. Como-session linchpins Mitchell Ayres and the Ray Charles Singers appear on many tracks, lending that quintessentially '50s/MOR sound to nearly every track. Much more apt to be found on the night tables of infirm senior citizens than on the shelves of record collectors, Sings Songs of Faith & Inspiration is an average collection of Perry Como at his most sedate and conservative.
