Singer/mandolinist Paul Williams and the Victory Trio know that, by MTV standards, their brand of bluegrass-gospel is a little old-fashioned. Far from being apologetic, however, they proudly serve as one of the last bastions of good old-fashioned Christian values. These values include a born-again philosophy, clearly evident in the titles of songs like "In Heaven She'll Live On and On" and "Are You Washed in the Blood." These values, like older country music, also embrace the simplicity of a rural lifestyle, highlighted by family, friends, and community. From a musical point of view, this also means that Williams and friends don't care much for electric guitars and basses, drums, and synthesizers. Instead, they deliver songs like "He's Answered Each Prayer" and "As Soon as I Touch Calvary" with the aid of mandolins, fiddles, guitars, banjos, and rich harmonies. The acoustic backdrop gives these songs an authentic feel, while the vocals carry the conviction of the singers. Williams' partners include lead vocalist Billy Proffitt, baritone Mike Grove, high-baritone Karen Benton, and multi-instrumentalist David Johnson. It's an inspired match, and When the Morning Comes stands as a testament that despite progress, some things are just fine the way they are. ~ Ronnie D. Lankford, Jr., Rovi
