On this release, flautist Paul Horn steps into the timeless beauty of baroque music's most quietly appealing composers. Pachelbel, Bach and Palestrina are all represented, with Horn's focus on the extravagant beauty of the flute family, including the low, low sounds of the contrabass flute and combinations of c flute, alto flute and bass flute. Simple purity gives way to massive sonorities created by the three choirs of flutes used in one of Palestrina's motets. After moving through tracks from the 16th through 18th centuries, the album closes with three of the motets written in 1960 by the late Maurice Duruflé. Paul Horn's music has been heard in virtually every corner of the globe — a partial list of his recordings takes up no less than 13 pages in his fine autobiography, Inside Paul Horn. ~ Backroads Music/Heartbeats, Rovi
